PROCEDURES | Sleep Apnea / Snoring

When obstructive sleep apnea occurs, the tongue is sucked against the back of the throat. This blocks the upper airway and air flow stops. When the oxygen level in the brain becomes low enough the sleeper partially awakens, the obstruction in the throat clears and the flow of air starts again, usually with a loud gasp.

People with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have disrupted sleep and low blood oxygen levels. OSA has been associated with cardiovascular problems and excessive daytime sleepiness. Snoring is a very common problem which can be associated with sleep apnea. Snoring affects not only the patient who does not get restful sleep, but also often the bed partner who finds it difficult to sleep listening to the snorer. Today snoring can be effectively treated, and no longer needs to be tolerated by patients and their bed partners.

Treatment of Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Dr. Moriconi has performed surgery for the correction of snoring and sleep apnea. Advancement surgery of the upper and lower jaw has been proven over many years to be a highly effective treatment for the obstructive sleep apnea patient, resulting in up to a 90% reduction in symptoms and an effective cure for the disorder. Traditionally, this surgery is performed as an adjunct to other methods of treatment, and is not indicated for all patients. Dr. Moriconi can evaluate you for this potential surgery during your consultation.

The Pillar® procedure is a newer, highly effective treatment for snoring and sleep apnea, which is FDA cleared, and currently being performed as an office procedure under a local anesthetic by Dr. Moriconi.

Less invasive and less painful than surgical tissue removal procedures, it only takes a single, short office visit to perform the Pillar® procedure. Made of material used in medical procedures for many years, Pillar® palatal inserts are designed to be invisible, and should not be felt or interfere with swallowing or speech. Many patients resume normal diets and activities the same day.

Most patients soon report a noticeable, lasting reduction in snoring. In one clinical study, nearly 80% of patients’ sleep apnea was reduced. Many patients who cannot tolerate CPAP or who are frustrated with it, will benefit from this procedure. If you would like more information on this procedure, feel free to schedule a consultation with Dr. Moriconi.
